What three words would you use to describe yourself?

I would describe myself as strategic, proficient, and ethical.  Professionally speaking, it is integral to the human resources profession that every practitioner is strategic in meeting the overall goals and objectives of the organization, proficient in your subject field and on federal, state, and local laws, and ethical in exercising sound judgement and decision-making practices.

Please tell us about your job.

As the Associate Vice President, I am responsible for directing, promoting, and implementing comprehensive classification and compensation, employee relations, and training and development programs for the South Carolina Technical College System.  Furthermore, I am responsible for providing vision and leadership for classification and compensation, employee relations, training and development initiatives across the System.

What is the biggest challenge of your job?

The biggest challenge of my job is managing multiple competing and time-sensitive priorities on a daily basis, while mitigating the risks and liabilities to the System.  While my role is responsible for managing very time-sensitive information, incidents, and initiatives, I find it very rewarding directing the human resources programs as a transformational and servant leader.

What do you like about your job?

I love establishing and sustaining effective working relationships with all 16 Technical Colleges, because I learn something new daily.  I love learning about new human resources practices, becoming proficient on new legislation, policies, procedures, and guidelines, interacting with employees, customers, and students, and identifying innovative ways to help the Colleges accomplish their strategic goals and objectives.

What drew you to working for the System?

I was drawn to working for the System through the working relationships and networks that I had with the numerous human resources professionals associated with the South Carolina Technical College System.  In serving as a Senior Human Resources Consultant to the System, I was able to have an intimate knowledge of the ethical and decision-making practices of the Human Resource Services (HRS) Division and play an active role in helping the agency accomplish its strategic goals and objectives.  The opportunity to network and forge those relationships with HRS made me feel at home and confirmed this was the right decision for me.
