“I’m going to have to tell you a lot of stuff that’s secret in order
for you to really get a grasp of what’s happening,” said Russell.
“And he started with how much money we were going to
have to ask for, and I remember that was more money—and this
would’ve been my fourth year chairing this committee—than we
had asked for in all four years. I thought, ‘This is a heck of a proj-
ect we’re doing.’ But we got it done.”
Later, Martin toured the Boeing operation and saw what it
takes to be one of those workers.
“There were a couple of things that struck me. Number one
was I was fascinated that we could train somebody to that level.
Number two I knew I could never do that.”
“It’s just detailed. It’s extremely detailed, and it’s repetitive. One
of the people leading the tour was asked, ‘So, when you’re look-
ing for people, who makes the best potential person to train?’”
